What is the most common problem that you see in your psychology office?
People who call for appointments are often parents, couples or adults who are in crisis because they have recently become overwhelmed emotionally and are seeking help in feeling better. Prior to the first appointment we ask the patients to complete several assessments to assist us in getting to know them better psychologically. At the first appointment which is fifty minutes in length we obtain a personal psychological history and focus on the immediate problem in order to provide an assessment of the situation. The assessment provides the psychologist with the needed information to move forward with the appropriate therapy and goal setting. By the end of the appointment the client will have been assisted in gaining insight into their emotions and directed in the next steps which may include several more appointments. It is very important that a patient feel that the psychologist can help them with their problems and that a positive therapeutic connection is created and his should be evident in the first session.
